Hello from the Flophouse
There has been, for some years now, a board game night running out of a house in Moorooka. Around twenty people show up most months. Dice get rolled. Snacks get eaten. Someone always asks if Catan counts as a personality trait. (It does. We don't judge.)
What there hasn't been — until now — is anywhere to put the long-form stuff. The stories from a particularly chaotic round of Coup. The games we keep meaning to explain before you arrive so you don't spend your first fifteen minutes reading the rulebook backwards. The occasional post about why we do this, what we're building, what the house cat thinks about Sagrada. (She doesn't think about Sagrada. She thinks about being near you and loudly judging your strategy.)
So: the blog. It'll mostly be light — session notes, game spotlights, the odd bit of reflection on what a queer social space looks like when it's built around cardboard and hexagons. No algorithm, no newsletter pressure, no posts for the sake of posting. We'll write when there's something worth saying.
You don't need to read any of it to enjoy a night here. Come, play, eat your BYO snacks in someone else's lounge room. But if you're curious what goes on between the events, or you want to read more than fits on an event card — this is where that lives now.
We started in 2022 as a small thing for a small group of friends. It's grown, as small things do, without ever quite meaning to. This blog is the part where we start paying attention to that.
Welcome aboard. Pull up a chair. The game teaches itself after the first round.
