Good Heavens! Sorry to leave you waiting gents, I was just in the conservatory buggeringsupervising the gardener; strapping fellow, salt of the earth and built for scrumming. Rather Of The People, what what? Not like you upstanding fellows! Still, lusty lad.

One does not, of course, attend an evening of cards and conversation in expectation of fortune — fortune being a vulgar thing to expect — and yet attend we do, pretending the cold is a matter of consequence in a city that has never owned a proper winter. Refreshment shall be had. Bring your wits and a tolerable humour.

Thank you all for coming this evening to what promises to be a splendid gathering. Here we find ourselves, dice in hand, playing such diverting sports as feature the ton, the upper crust, the cream of society, Proper People of all sorts. I've had the boy lay on a most delectable spread of games about rich people, fine establishments and cultural peccadillos for us to have a jolly good time. Strangers shall become acquaintances; acquaintances, by the third round, conspirators.
